Thule TCRD-2 87 Liter Rolling Duffel
Being on the road over two hundred days a year requires me to have, not only ski, video and outdoor equipment but also travel-related gear that is durable to handle an array of conditions. When I heard Thule was coming out with a line of backpacks and rolling bags, I was immediately intrigued and wanted to check them out. And who wouldn't be? Normally everything you see with the name Thule on it is usually on top of your car in the shape of metal bars, racks and large plastic boxes. So the idea of a company incorporating this level of durability into a travel bag was enough for me to want to try one out. At first glance the roller bag doesn't appear to be anything extraordinary, although it does have a contempory-chic vibe with silver wheels and a clean and tough black exterior of water-resistant fabric. It is very eye-catching. However once you get past the aluminum hardware, compression straps and large zippers you can start to see the benefits that Thule has brought to the game like: The oversized wheels, goggle compartment and polypropylene back, for added I especially enjoyed the oversized wheels in my travels. They became something that I really noticed, when in fact initially I didn't think they would matter that much at all. They made hauling my luggage around easier, whether I was dragging it through a campground or making my way into the hotel lobby. As a Telemark skier this collection of bags makes sense, because they include features that are made for us. The split-compartments were perfect for keeping certain ski items separate and it could even be used for damp ski pants after a day on the hill if I had to get back on the road right after the last run of the day. If you aren't looking for a large roller-style bag, there are other pieces in the series that are great as well. Another one of my favorites was the Liter Sling Pack, which worked great for a laptop computer and for carry-on items for traveling by plane. Whatever type of traveling you might be into, Thule has done a great job keeping in mind people who travel, but more importantly people who travel so they can play in the outdoors. -J.M.
